DEARBORN – Murtadha Jabbar Alizairij, 38, of Dearborn was charged with deliberately striking a pedestrian, Haider Al Fadawi, 40, of Dearborn who was crossing Michigan Avenue the night of Aug. 23 near Howe Street.

The men, who had known each other for years, reportedly had financial disputes between their families.

While Alizairij fled after the 10:45 p.m. hit-and-run, he later called police officers from his home, admitted his involvement and was subsequently arrested, police said.

Fadawi was rushed to a local hospital, where he remains in a coma.

He is known by locals for his vehicle decorated with thousands of brightly reflective chrome pieces.

Fadawi lost his 6-year-old daughter in 2021 in a hit-and-run on Bingham Street which has remained unsolved.

Alizairij was charged Aug. 25 by the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office with assault with intent to commit murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, and assault with a dangerous weapon.

He was arraigned in 19th District Court beforeJudge Gene Hunt in Dearborn’s with a $750,000 cash bond and was ordered to wear a GPS tether.

If Fadawi dies, the charges against Alizairij could be upgraded to murder.
