Ali K. Bazzi of Dearborn was appointed to the Dearborn Public Schools Board of Education Sept. 8. Bazzi will replace Irene Watts, who resigned from the board in August.
DEARBORN — Ali K. Bazzi of Dearborn was appointed to fill one of two vacant trustee positions on the Dearborn Public Schools Board of Education Sept. 8.
The board postponed filling a second vacant position for another week.
Bazzi will serve until November 2026 when a trustee will be elected.
Bazzi is the founder of Progressive Management Co. and Archer Creative. He is also part of the Zaman International advisory board, runs the organization’s Run Walk Picnic, and was an advocate in the campaign supporting the passage of the district’s 2023 Operating Millage Renewal.
Bazzi will join the board for his first meeting as trustee at 7 p.m. Sept. 15, when it meets at Henry Ford College.
Trustees govern DPS and HFC.
Former Trustee Irene Watts resigned from the board on Aug. 11 after she and her family moved out of the district. Then Trustee Hussein Berry stepped down on Aug. 18, saying he had planned to leave later but did not want the remaining trustees to have to go through a search for a new trustee twice.
An unprecedented 39 people applied to fill one of the two vacant positions.
The board has 30 days to appoint a replacement when a trustee leaves the board. Bazzi was selected to fill Watts’ position. The board has until Sept. 17 to fill Berry’s vacated seat. Both appointees will serve until November 2026.
After elections are certified, those newly elected to the board will immediately take their seats.
The Sept. 8 board meetings are available on the district’s YouTube Channel. HFC records its board meetings and posts them, usually the next day, on its YouTube Channel.
