WYANDOTTE – Officer Chelsea Haskin became the first female police officer to be promoted to detective, Deputy Police Chief Archie Hamilton announced Wednesday.
Haskin, who joined the department Aug. 9, 2016, was promoted June 20. She received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Eastern Michigan University.
Hamilton said about 87 percent of all law enforcement officers are male, which present female officers with unique challenges.
“For this reason, Detective Haskin’s success as a law enforcement officer is truly remarkable,” he said.
Hamilton said she will be assigned to the Wyandotte Public Schools in the fall as a school resource officer.
“I cannot think of a better person for that role,” he said. “The position will allow her to act as a role model for students, specifically young women, who may think male-dominated professions like law enforcement are not an option.”
