TAYLOR — A tenant failed to pay her rent after cashing a $5,030 State of Michigan COVID Emergency Rental Assistance Program check on June 7, and used some of the cash to buy alcohol, which was witnessed by a court officer at the convenience store where the woman cashed the check.

The apartment manager, whose mother owns the complex, notified state officials about the fund misappropriation, and was advised by a state investigator to file a fraud complaint, which he did July 6 at the Taylor Police Department. He also filed a civil suit against her in 23rd District Court.
