TRENTON – Two police officers rescued a dog who broke through the canal ice at 5:20 p.m. Feb. 10 in Elizabeth Park, following a 911 call from its owner.
Cpl. Seth Bond and Officer Mike Bedsun arrived at the scene within minutes and devised a rescue plan as the dog struggled to stay afloat in the icy water.
Bedsun entered the water and broke through sections of ice to reach the dog, while Bond coordinated the operation from the shallow water near shore in a tense and physically demanding operation which successfully ended by reuniting the dog with its owner.
Deputy Police Chief Jeff Neese praised the officers’ actions, courage, and dedication to community safety.
“Their quick thinking, teamwork, and willingness to put themselves in harm’s way embody the very essence of public service,” he said. “Thanks to their bravery, a life was saved today.”
The Police Department reminds residents to be cautious around frozen bodies of water during periods of fluctuating temperatures. They also urge people who spot an animal in distress to call 911 instead of attempting a risky rescue on their own.
A Police Department press release said that acts of service like the dog rescue helps the department build trust within the community and helps ensure the safety of all its residents, both human and animal.
