TAYLOR – The City Council declined to change the way vacancies in its elected body are filled between elections by defeating a charter revision during its March 3 meeting.

The city attorney would have drafted the language of the city charter change if the proposal had passed.

The proposal was initiated because for approximately a year the council was unable to fill a vacancy that occurred when Butch Ramik resigned from the council in anticipation of an appointment to the Wayne County Commission, which did not occur.

However, the past council was unable to muster a majority vote for a single candidate.

The proposal would have given a vote to the city clerk if, after six regular city council meetings, the body was unable to fill an unexpired term among themselves. The measure would not have applied to any other vacant city roles.
