TRENTON — A woman made an identity theft report Aug. 20 after she learned a scammer had used her name and Social Security number to obtain multiple credit cards and gain access to her bank accounts.
She said in late July, she was contacted that she was a sweepstakes winner, and she gave her Social Security number to the person who contacted her. Soon afterward, she began receiving credit card statements, as well as bank notifications about missing funds.
The victim said the perpetrator had maxed out her credit union line of credit.
She was advised to keep her credit frozen, to never provide sensitive or personal information to unknown parties, and to contact the Social Security Administration about obtaining a new Social Security number.
