The Academy Award-themed books by authors Bruce Davis and Michael Schulman being featured by Henry Ford Centennial Library.
Former Academy exec Bruce Davis and The New Yorker’s Michael Schulman will discuss new books on Feb. 16 and March 2
DEARBORN – In anticipation of the upcoming 2023 Academy Awards, the Dearborn Public Library is providing the opportunity to go in-depth on all things Oscars and the history of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences with two virtual author talks, on Zoom and open to the public.
The first Zoom discussion will feature Bruce Davis and a discussion of his new book:
• Feb. 16 at 6:30 p.m. – Davis, author of “The Academy and The Award: The Coming of Age of Oscar and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences”
Davis, executive director of the Academy for 20 years, tells a revealing and compelling story of the people, famous and infamous, who shaped a marginal organization that teetered on the brink of bankruptcy, into what became a juggernaut in the entertainment industry, and a major cultural institution.
The second Zoom discussion will feature The New Yorker’s Michael Schulman as he discusses his new book:
• March 2 at 6:30 p.m. – Schulman, author of “Oscar Wars: A History of Hollywood in Gold, Sweat, and Tears”
While many other books on the Oscars act as yearbooks with encyclopedic coverage of every ceremony, “Oscar Wars” is narrative-driven and selective: Each of the book’s 11 chapters takes a deep dive into a particular year, category or conflict that represented a turning point for the Oscars, for Hollywood, or for the culture at large.
Tune in to these discussions from anywhere with a Wi-Fi signal, or go to Henry Ford Centennial Library Auditorium, 16301 Michigan Ave., where both events will be streamed live.
Copies of “The Academy and the Award: The Coming of Age of Oscar and the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences” and “Oscar Wars: A History of Hollywood in Gold, Sweat, and Tears” will be available for purchase at the library before, during and after the events.
Registration is required to attend these events.
Go to dearbornlibrary.org and locate the author talks in the events calendar to register. Answer the questions on the registration page to indicate whether you will be joining us on Zoom or in the Library auditorium to watch the streamed conversations. A Zoom meeting link will be emailed to registrants who prefer to view the event from a personal device.
The Dearborn Public Library is also conducting a 2023 Oscars Contest for cardholders. Participants can submit their predictions for the five major award categories from Jan. 30 to March 10 for a chance to win a grand prize. Details are available at dearbornlibrary.org in the events calendar.
