DETROIT MERCY THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS ‘THE GROWN UPS’

The Detroit Mercy Theatre Company presents Simon Henriques and Skylar Fox’s “The Grown Ups” April 4 to 13 at the Marlene Boll Theater inside the Boll Family YMCA, 1401 Broadway in Detroit.

The play, which is described as part satire and part scary, focuses on a group of camp counselors who gather each night around a camp fire and wonder whether to reveal to the children at camp what is happening in the outside world, which is facing a looming crisis.

The counselors are also struggling with whether to pass on camp traditions that are exclusionary or racist, and examines how scary it is to change the world that shaped you, especially when doing so is an important thing to do.

As the camp counselors swap stories around the campfire and bond, they challenge each other’s preconceived beliefs and perspectives, especially under the shadow of turmoil in the outside world.

The show is timely given current world events that make the future seem uncertain and unpredictable.

Director and Performing Arts Department Chair Andrew Papa said “The Grown Ups” is a show he hopes will provoke discussion among attendees on the drive home.

“What if something like this were to happen? How would we respond?” he said. “What can we do to ensure the story of the show doesn’t become a reality?

“It’s a piece that’s just as intellectual as it is emotional, and it’s also a great call to action.”

Show times are 7:30 p.m. April 4, 5, 11 and 12, with 3 p.m. April 6 and 13 matinees. General admission is $25, with $18 tickets for seniors and Detroit Mercy faculty, staff and alumni, and $10 tickets for veterans and students.

All tickets are $10 on April 11 for community night, and $5 on April 5 for students and alumni of the College of Liberal Arts and Education/College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences, with code CHASS25, with free tickets to faculty and staff of CLAE/CHASS by emailing [email protected].

On April 6, Genevieve E. Meyers, PhD of UDM Department of Political Science, will lead a discussion on navigating chaos, drawing on historical precedents and contemporary analysis, and discussing the role of government agencies and the impact on civil society in the event of a nationwide crisis on American soil.

To order tickets, call 313-993-3270 or go to DetroitMercyArts.com.
