Whether you’re in the mood for uplifting music or side-splitting comedy, there’s something for everyone as the North American tour of the Alicia Keys musical “Hell’s Kitchen” comes to the Fisher Theater and the original unauthorized parody sequel “Steel Poinsettias” brings laughter to the Ringwald Theater at Affirmations in Ferndale.

ALICIA KEYS’ MUSICAL ‘HELL’S KITCHEN’ COMES TO FISHER THEATER

The Alicia Keys musical “Hell’s Kitchen,” inspired by her life, music and community comes to town Dec. 2 to 14 at Detroit’s Fisher Theater.

The story focuses on Ali, a 17-year-old girl searching for freedom, passion and her place in the world, and follows her as she meets her musical mentor and others who help her grow up and realize her potential.

The story, described as “relatable, raw and refreshingly fun,” is a celebration of finding purpose, discovering oneself and bonding with uplifting people.

The show combines Keys’ greatest hits with new songs written for the musical, brought to life with high-energy choreography.

Songs include “Girl on Fire,” “If I Ain’t Got You,” “Fallin’,” “Teenage Love Affair,” “You Don’t Know My Name,” and “Unthinkable (I’m Ready),” as well as new songs “Authors of Forever” and “Love Looks Better.”

The songs tell of love, life and rebellion, and appeal to people of all backgrounds.

Performances are 7:30 p.m. Dec. 2 to 6 and 9 to 13 and 6:30 p.m. Dec. 7 and 14, with 2 p.m. Dec. 6 and 13 and 1 p.m. Dec. 7 and 14 matinees. For more information, go to BroadwayInDetroit.com.

The show contains some strong language and moments with mature themes.

Joe Bailey as M’Lynn demonstrates that finding laughter through tears is the best holiday emotion in “Steel Poinsettias,” an original unauthorized parody sequel, which runs Dec. 5 to 21 at The Ringwald Theatre at Affirmations Community Center, 290 W. Nine Mile in Ferndale.

RINGWALD PRESENTS ORIGINAL PARODY ‘STEEL POINSETTIAS’

In the Ringwald tradition of past comedic shows, playwright Vince Kelley presents the unauthorized parody sequel to “Steel Magnolias,” dubbed “Steel Poinsettias” at the Ringwald Theater in time for the holidays.

Kelley’s past parodies include “Have Yourself a Misery Little Christmas,” “The E(X-Mas)-ist” and “Jingle Babs.”

As the characters in “Steel Poinstettias” gather in Truvy’s Beauty Spot, Shelby’s son, Jackson, Jr., announces a life-changing decision that throws M’Lynn for a loop.

However, Truvy, Annelle, Clairee, and Ouiser, along with Annelle’s daughter Shelby,  work together to deliver a holiday everyone will enjoy and to keep Chinquapin Parish happy, healthy, and Blush and Bashful Pink.

Kelley has filled the show with witty humor, clever antics and laughter mixed with tears, making the story a love letter to the original show.

Directed by Vince Kelley and Brandy Joe Plambeck, the cast of “Steel Poinsettias” includes Joe Bailey as M’Lynn, Chase Bowman as Jackson, Jr., Quinn Jacob as Shelby, Richard Payton as Truvy, Brandy Joe Plambeck as Annelle, Jamie Richards as Ouiser and Mark Sobolewski as Clairee.

Performances are 7 p.m. Dec. 5, 6, 8, 12, 13, 15, 19 and 20, with 3 p.m. Dec. 7, 14 and 21 matinees. Tickets are $25 on the weekend and $15 on Mondays, and are available at theRingwald.com.

The Ringwald is a cashless venue, but credit cards are accepted at the door. The theater is located inside Affirmations Community Center at 290 W. Nine Mile Road in Ferndale.
