DEARBORN – Despite the cold, Holiday Nights in Greenfield Village provided seasonal warmth during its run Dec. 4 to 28 at The Henry Ford.

The annual event, which includes musical performances, holiday vignettes and activities, and culinary treats celebrates two centuries of American holiday traditions.

Model T rides and horse drawn wagons offered trips around the village, while illuminated lanes drew visitors on foot from Main Street to the brightly lit covered bridge on Christie Street to Santa holding court on the upper balcony of the Robert Frost Home on Maple Lane.

Musical performances were plentiful, from the Masters of Music Jazz trio at the Davidson-Gerson Gallery of Glass to the Main Street Quartet on the steps of Town Hall. The Dodworth Saxhorn Band played at Main and Washington streets, while the Christie Street Quartet sang in the bandstand near the covered bridge.

Mummers, which are costumed revelers, bandied with guests along Main Street, while other historical interpreters explained holiday customs from different eras, including the World War II Red Cross hospitality station at the Cotswold Cottage, the Cohen Millinery shop and at the pre-Civil War Susquehanna Plantation.

When attendees wished to warm up, the glassblowing demonstrations at the Liberty Craftworks offered a cozy retreat, while the Detroit Historical Museum’s model train display in the Lodge, presented by the Glancy Trains Model Railroad Club, provided a warm respite as well.

In addition to the prepaid dining experiences sold with admission, Stand 44 and Taste of History offered full meals, while food stands through the village offered treats ranging from donuts, sandwiches, popcorn and more, as well as soft drinks and adult beverages.

The evening ended with fireworks, of which residents within a five-mile radius are well aware.
